Colombo Fort was originally built by the Portuguese in the 16th century as a strategic military post overlooking the Indian Ocean. When the Dutch took control in the 17th century, they expanded the fortifications and added many administrative buildings. Later, the British, who arrived in the early 1800s, transformed the area into a thriving commercial center. Over time, the actual fort walls were removed, but the name “Colombo Fort” remained, symbolizing the city's transformation from a coastal outpost into a cosmopolitan hub.

Today, Colombo Fort is a lively mix of past and present. Landmarks such as the Old Parliament Building, the Lighthouse Clock Tower, and the President’s House remind visitors of Sri Lanka's colonial past.
