The Nine Arch Bridge was constructed in 1921 during British colonial rule, as part of the railway extension from Ella to Demodara. Legend has it that when World War I broke out, steel allocated for the bridge’s construction was redirected for war purposes. In response, local builders and engineers designed and built the bridge using only stone bricks and cement. The result was an engineering marvel—nine majestic arches stretching 91 meters across and rising 24 meters high—built without a single steel bar. Today, it stands as a tribute to Sri Lanka’s resourceful craftsmanship and colonial past.

The bridge is a key attraction in the scenic hill town of Ella and offers more than just visual delight.
