A sacred and serene riverbank that holds deep spiritual significance
The Falgu River flows quietly past the spiritual town of Bodhgaya, adding a serene charm to the land known for enlightenment. Though it appears dry for most of the year, the Falgu River is revered in Hindu tradition, especially for performing sacred rituals like Pind Daan in memory of ancestors. The riverbank is lined with ghats, where pilgrims from across the country come to perform these rites. The calm surroundings, the ancient legends associated with the river, and its proximity to key landmarks like Vishnupad Temple and the Mahabodhi Temple make it an essential stop on any pilgrimage or spiritual journey. With mythological connections to Lord Vishnu and Sita Mata, this river carries not just water (when in season), but also centuries of faith. Visitors often enjoy peaceful walks along the bank, sunrise views, or participating in local religious ceremonies.

History and Legacy
The Falgu River is steeped in Hindu mythology and has been mentioned in various ancient texts. It is believed that Lord Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana visited the banks of this river during their exile. A famous legend tells of Sita Mata performing Pind Daan for King Dasharatha here when Lord Rama was away. When no one else was available to witness the ritual, the river itself is said to have testified—but later denied the event to Lord Rama. In response, Sita cursed the river to remain dry for most of the year. To this day, the river appears mostly sandy on the surface, despite water flowing underground.
Over the centuries, the river became a major site for ancestral rituals, especially during Pitru Paksha. It flows through Gaya and Bodhgaya, areas associated with Lord Vishnu and Lord Buddha. Even in its dryness, the Falgu River flows through the heart of India’s religious consciousness, carrying with it the spiritual legacy of generations.
