History and Legacy

The Great Buddha Statue of Bodhgaya was the result of years of meticulous planning and international collaboration. Construction began in 1982 and took seven years to complete. It was officially unveiled in 1989 by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. Crafted with a blend of sandstone and red granite, this seated Buddha in the dhyana mudra (meditative pose) represents the moment of enlightenment.

The statue stands atop a lotus platform and is surrounded by ten smaller sculptures of Buddha’s disciples, adding to the sanctity and harmony of the space. Japanese, Thai, Sri Lankan, and Tibetan architects and artists were involved in its creation, making it a beautiful fusion of Buddhist art and global craftsmanship. Today, it serves as a serene backdrop for reflection and meditation, drawing visitors from across the world who seek peace, inspiration, or a simple moment of silence.
