A Spiritual Jewel on Jade Island

Ngoc Son Temple, meaning “Temple of the Jade Mountain,” is one of Hanoi’s most visited cultural and spiritual landmarks. Situated on a small island in the picturesque Hoan Kiem Lake, it is connected to the mainland by the charming red-painted Huc Bridge, which translates to “Morning Sunlight Bridge.” The temple is a harmonious blend of Taoist, Confucian, and Buddhist architecture, adorned with intricate carvings, incense-filled halls, and artifacts honoring Vietnam’s historical and cultural legacy. Dedicated to national hero General Tran Hung Dao, scholar Van Xuong, and the lake’s guardian turtle, the temple serves as both a place of worship and a symbol of Vietnam’s pride. Visitors come here not only for its spiritual significance but also for its serene atmosphere and beautiful views, making it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Hanoi’s Old Quarter.

History and Legacy

Ngoc Son Temple was originally constructed in the 19th century during the reign of Emperor Nguyen Dynasty. It was built on Jade Island to honor General Tran Hung Dao, the legendary military leader who defeated Mongol invasions in the 13th century, as well as Van Xuong, a revered scholar, and the lake’s guardian turtle spirit. The temple also pays tribute to Buddhism, reflecting Vietnam’s cultural harmony between religion, history, and folklore.

The temple’s location is steeped in legend, closely tied to the famous Hoan Kiem Lake story in which Emperor Le Loi returned a magical sword to the Golden Turtle God. Inside, visitors can find preserved giant soft-shell turtles, ancient ceremonial relics, and calligraphy artworks. Over the years, Ngoc Son Temple has become a cultural symbol of Hanoi, representing patriotism, wisdom, and faith. Its blend of natural beauty and historical depth makes it a beloved landmark for both locals and tourists.
