Gregory Lake was built during the reign of British Governor Sir William Gregory in 1873 by damming the Nanu Oya stream. The primary purpose was to control flooding in the Nuwara Eliya area, but over time, the lake evolved into a prime recreational center. British officers and their families used it for rowing and leisure, and the lakefront became a picnic hotspot. The nearby racecourse and colonial buildings once formed a vibrant social hub for the elite class. Today, remnants of colonial architecture still grace the surroundings, giving the lake an old-world charm that blends beautifully with Sri Lanka’s natural splendor.

In recent years, the Sri Lankan government has revitalized Gregory Lake into a full-fledged family attraction. Well-paved walkways, lush lawns, water sports, and safe zones for kids make it a popular weekend getaway. It’s also an excellent place for photography, with panoramic views of the mountains and floating mists. From morning walks to sunset boat rides, Gregory Lake’s legacy of leisure continues to attract visitors year-round.
