A revered hilltop temple where faith meets breathtaking views
Manakamana Temple, located a top a lush hill in Gorkha district, is one of Nepal's most important pilgrimage sites. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Bhagwati, an incarnation of Parvati, believed to grant the heartfelt wishes of her devotees — hence the name "Manakamana" (Mana = Heart, Kamana = Wish). Though it lies between Pokhara and Kathmandu, it is easily accessible by road from Pokhara and through a scenic cable car ride, which is an experience in itself. Thousands visit this sacred site annually to offer prayers, take blessings, and enjoy panoramic views of the Himalayas and the Trishuli River. The spiritual atmosphere, combined with natural beauty, makes Manakamana not just a temple visit but a journey of inner peace and awe.

History and Legacy
The origin of Manakamana Temple dates back to the 17th century during the reign of King Ram Shah of Gorkha. According to legend, the queen possessed divine powers, which only her trusted priest knew. After the queen’s sudden death, the priest also mysteriously died. It is said that a stone was found at the queen’s cremation site that later started giving divine signs. The current temple was built on that very spot, believed to be the embodiment of the goddess herself.
The temple has since become a symbol of hope and devotion. Pilgrims come from far and wide, some even barefoot, carrying offerings such as flowers, vermilion, and sweets. The practice of animal sacrifice continues as part of some traditional rituals, though it is being gradually replaced by symbolic offerings. The advent of the cable car in 1998 has made the shrine even more accessible, turning it into both a spiritual and tourism highlight of the region.
