History and Legacy

The Folk Heritage Museum was established in 2001 by Her Majesty Queen Mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck with the aim of preserving Bhutan’s traditional lifestyle amid growing modernization. The main attraction—a three-storeyed mud-and-wood house—was built over 150 years ago and relocated from the countryside to Thimphu. It provides a real sense of how rural Bhutanese families lived, worked, cooked, and stored food, offering a direct connection to the country’s agrarian roots.

The museum not only preserves old objects and traditions but also promotes active cultural practices. It often hosts live demonstrations such as traditional cooking, butter churning, or weaving. A small restaurant on-site also serves authentic Bhutanese meals, giving visitors a full sensory experience. Through its exhibitions and activities, the museum plays an important role in reminding younger generations and visitors of the simplicity, sustainability, and harmony that define Bhutan’s rural past.
