A Spiritual Landmark Dedicated to Peace, Compassion, and the Third King of Bhutan
Located in the heart of Thimphu, the Memorial Chorten is one of Bhutan’s most prominent religious landmarks and a symbol of peace, compassion, and national pride. This whitewashed stupa, with golden spires and intricate carvings, was built in 1974 to honor the memory of His Majesty King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, the third King of Bhutan and the father of modern Bhutan. Unlike typical stupas that enshrine relics, this Chorten contains a photo of the King and numerous Buddhist statues that reflect his vision of cultural preservation and modern development. It is not just a monument but a place of daily devotion for Bhutanese people, with locals seen circumambulating the stupa while chanting mantras or spinning prayer wheels. The calm and spiritual energy of the site makes it a must-visit for anyone wanting to understand Bhutanese faith, culture, and respect for their royal lineage.

History and Legacy
The Memorial Chorten was constructed in 1974 by Her Majesty the Queen Mother, Ashi Phuntsho Choden, in memory of her son, King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, who passed away in 1972. King Jigme Dorji is fondly remembered for modernizing Bhutan through reforms such as the introduction of parliamentary governance, legal systems, and international diplomacy while preserving the nation’s deep spiritual heritage. The Chorten was designed to reflect his vision of compassion, unity, and progress rooted in Buddhist values.
This Tibetan-style stupa does not contain human remains but instead is filled with religious texts and statues that represent the mind of Buddha. The site has become a spiritual hub for Thimphu residents who gather here daily for prayer and meditation. It stands as a timeless reminder of the king's wisdom and his contributions to the transformation of Bhutan into a sovereign, progressive nation without losing its cultural essence.
