The name Dashashwamedh comes from the ancient legend that Lord Brahma performed ten Ashwamedha Yagnas (horse sacrifices) here to welcome Lord Shiva. This makes it one of the holiest ghats in the city. The ghat has been a part of spiritual history for thousands of years and has been visited by saints, poets, and kings. It holds great importance in Hindu mythology and is considered an energy center for those who seek blessings, spiritual growth, and inner peace.
In earlier times, this ghat was also a hub for travelers and traders who came to Varanasi. The current structure was rebuilt in the 18th century by Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao and later by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore. Despite the changing times, Dashashwamedh Ghat has held on to its sacred charm. The Ganga Aarti, started in more recent years, has now become a daily spiritual event attracting thousands, making it a must-visit experience for anyone in Varanasi.
