The history of Kashi Vishwanath Temple dates back thousands of years. It is said to have been destroyed and rebuilt several times. The current structure was built in 1780 by Ahilyabai Holkar, the queen of Indore. Despite repeated attacks during Mughal rule, the spirit of the place remained strong, making it a symbol of resilience and devotion. The temple houses the Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva, which is considered one of the holiest in India.
The city of Kashi itself is believed to be created by Lord Shiva. Devotees believe that dying in Kashi and getting cremated near the temple grants moksha (liberation from the cycle of life and death). Over centuries, saints like Adi Shankaracharya, Goswami Tulsidas, Swami Vivekananda, and many others have visited this temple. The Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, inaugurated in 2021, has beautifully connected the temple to the Ganga River, creating an open and divine pathway for pilgrims.
