History and Legacy

The New Vishwanath Temple was constructed by the Birla Foundation, and the idea was supported by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, the founder of BHU. The construction started in 1931 and took several decades to complete, finally opening to the public in the 1960s. The temple's architecture is modern yet rooted in Indian tradition, making it a symbol of cultural and religious harmony.

The temple is made of white marble and is spread across several levels. At its heart is the Shiva Linga, and other shrines in the complex are dedicated to Lakshmi Narayan, Parvati, Ganesha, Saraswati, Hanuman, and Nataraj. Verses from the Bhagavad Gita are inscribed on the temple walls, allowing devotees and students alike to learn and reflect. Being inside BHU, the temple is also a cultural hub where students often come to relax, pray, or find peace during their studies.
